Their Marks on Time

From deepest time a beast arose
That fought in groups against its foes,
And let their fluids run and spill,
Until the wearied creature fell,
And fed its nimble hunters well,
Who learned this was the way to kill,
And made their mark on time.

A beast devised a new defense:
To reach a size beyond immense.
And so his kind grew more and more,
Till beasts their size could not be slain
And crushed whomever brought them pain.
They ruled the land like none before,
And made their mark on time.

The beast that first devised the feather
Used its warmth in biting weather.
Next, to help attract a mate,
And then, their dreams to satisfy:
To join the kingdom of the sky!
Their legacy endures to date,
As does their mark on time.

A beast arose whose brutal might
Could break his foe in any fight;
He feasted where his victims lay.
But still, his awesome strength and size
Could not withstand his world's demise.
He perished alongside his prey,
And made his mark on time.

Upon the wreck of their demise
Another being built its rise,
And left the ancient beasts behind.
But still their marks on time remain,
Beneath the windswept hill and plain,
Awaiting one whose probing mind
Would let them live once more.
