Christian support for evolution

Description

Another diagram for EWilloughby’s, keesey’s and my long-running book project, intended as an illustration for this chapter. This image previously existed as a bar graph, but I was never really satisfied with it in its original form. After I recently discovered how to make 3-D pie charts in Adobe Illustrator, I decided to redo the graph in that format, which I think looks a lot better.

The point of this chart is to demonstrate that most creationists in the United States are rejecting evolution in opposition to their church denomination’s position about this. 77% of American Christians belong to church denominations whose official position is to accept evolution, and only 23% don’t, yet 51% of American Christians are creationists. In other words, there are more than twice as many American creationists as there are American Christians whose church denominations don’t accept evolution. This means that more than half of American Christians who reject evolution actually belong to church denominations that accept it.

Do they make a conscious choice to reject their church’s position about this, or are they just unaware of it? There’s probably some of both, but I suspect it’s more often the latter. My goal with this chart is to encourage creationists to look up their church denomination’s position about evolution, because more than half the time, it will be something their church denomination approves of.
